Hemp Seed Chocolate Milk

Updated: Oct 6, 2022

This is an easy way to increase your protein consumption with very little effort or time, and it fits easily into most dietary preferences. The hemp seeds provide 10 grams of protein, and cacao powder is high in antioxidants and fibre. I love that I don’t have to rely on supplements to get a good boost of nutrition! Plus, who doesn’t love chocolate milk?!

This drink tastes best when it’s cold, so I recommend using very cold water, or chilling it in the fridge if you have the extra time. Since hemp seeds are so small, a high powered blender is key for making this milk smooth. A low powered blender, or a lower setting on a blender, will result in a grainy/sandy texture at the bottom of your glass. I’ve adapted this recipe from a vegan cookbook called Made With Love.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons hemp hearts (I typically buy this brand)

  • 1 1/2 cups very cold water

  • 1/2 tablespoon raw cacao powder (or cocoa powder will work, too!)

  • 1/2 - 1 tablespoon liquid sweetener of your choice (I use maple syrup, but Stevia or Lakanto Liquid Monk Fruit sweetener would also work for people avoiding sugar)

  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (I imagine you could use other extracts to change the flavouring here! Maybe a hazelnut extract?)

  • pinch of sea salt

Blend everything together on medium to high speed in your blender for 2 minutes or until smooth. Taste and adjust flavouring as necessary. Serve cold.
